Biographical Information

I spent most of my growing years in Midland, Michigan (parents: Eugene and Barbara E. Slagel). My education was fostered from 2nd through 7th grades at the Midland Christian School. After high school, I joined the ministry of Christian Adventures full time as a tour director, leading trips in Vermont, Nova Scotia, New Hampshire, Wyoming, Michigan, Florida and Pennsylvania. I attended Delta College, Kalamazoo Valley Community College and received a Bachelors of Arts degree (Bible, Religion and Philosophy) from Goshen College and my Masters (Theology) from Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary.

I have served as a pastor in two congregations before coming to EGMC: as Minister to Youth with Shore Mennonite (Shipshewana, IN) from 1988-1991, as Associate Minister and Interim Minister with Silverwood Mennonite (Goshen, IN) from 1991-1998.

Barbara, Carrie, Luke and Andrew

Barb was raised on a farm in Big Rapids, MI. She received degrees from Ferris State and Saginaw Valley State University, and the University of Notre Dame. Barb teaches intrsumental music at Bethansy Christian Schools. She is very remarkable.

Carrie is spending this year in Albuquerque, NM, with Service Adventure. She is working at St. Martin's, a Hsopitality Center for homeless people. We are very proud of her and her commitment to follow Christ through service..

Luke is an Junior at Bethany . He plays the trumpet in orchestra, Jazz Band, sings in the Jubilate Singers (the school chorus) and Cornerstone Singers (select ensemble) and plays soccer, basketball and baseball on school teams. Luke is very smart and makes me laugh a lot..

Andrew is a 8th grader at Bethany Christian Middle School . He plays trombone in the orchestra and he loves to sing. He plays plays soccer and basketball and baseball like his older brother. Andy is now the tallest member of the Slagel family (6'3'' at this writing - the picture is 2 years old) and has aspirations of 6'8".

Personal Interests

Basketball – You can find me a couple of times each week in the gym at Goshen College.

Softball/Baseball – I play slow-pitch softball (for our church team) whenever I am free from coaching baseball. I also coach at least two baseball teams and enjoy doing clinics and teaching.

Reading – My favorite authors are Fredrick Buechner, Marva Dawn, Jaques Ellul, Shusaku Endo, Ann Lamott, Elton Trueblood, Miroslav Volf and Walter Wangerin.

Kids – As a natural part of having active children, I go to concerts, basketball, soccer and baseball games and spend a good deal of time wrestling on the living room floor.

Barb – I am very committed to Barb and our relationship as we “have a blast” (our marriage motto) together.

Golf – One of my last decade's passions has been to learn how to golf. I especially like to golf with friends, for the uniqueness of the sport is that you can actually relate to someone while you play. I plan to participate in my 8th "Holey Week pilgrimage" with other pastors in South Carolina this Spring (March 12-18, 2008).
